Thorness Bay
Thorness Bay is a Site of special scientific interest (SSSI) and this includes the 2 miles of sandy beach. Despite having a large holiday park located right next door the beach is big enough to offer some peace and quiet whilst watching the boats in the Solent.

Coastal path from Gurnard to the East is closed due to erosion ( Winter 2023 to March 2024; no sign of reopening yet). Beach slippages at Thorness have exposed areas of both yellow and blue slipper clays.. wellies advised. The bridge over the stream to the West end of the beach has collapsed again. No bridge to the much wider, deeper, faster stream which at High tide now separates the East end of the beach ad it I'd hard to cross, especially with small children or small dogs... Ref: dog restrictions at Thorness beach:- No dog restrictions here but please, dog owners, please don't take your precious furries to ANY beach if it's over 20°. If you can't survive the temperature in a fur coat..they definitely can't. The dry sand & stones burn their paws just as it burns the soles of your feet! We see thoughtless dog owners here on holiday every year who think it's a great family day out..with the poor dog suffering sickness & heat stroke. Please think twice! ?
