Silverstrand Beach (Silver Strand)
Silverstrand is a fine sandy beach located just a few kilometres west of the city of Galway. It has spectacular views of Galway Bay and is a particularly popular beach for swimming and for family days out, with shallow and mostly calm waters, as well as a lifeguard service from June until September.
The beach has Blue Flag status and is reputed to be one of the cleanest in Ireland. However, the beach is mostly submerged at high tide, so it is advisable to check tidal tables before planning a visit. The beach is a little over 100 meters wide with rocks on either side of the sandy bathing area.
There is a car park nearly at beach level which has space for about 60 cars, with access via a short slipway. Public toilets can be found in the car park.
The nearby city of Galway is the fourth most populous city in the Republic of Ireland and one of its most vibrant cultural centres. In 2020 it will be one of two ‘European Capital of Culture’. The city has a host of restaurants, bars, pubs and museums. It is also known for being a distinctly ‘Irish’ city, with a strong heritage of Irish language, music and dancing.
