  • Trá Mór (or Tramore) simply translates from Gaelic to “big beach” which explains why there are quite a few of them dotted around Ireland. This particular Tra Mor is located in a secluded corner of Donegal and is probably the best of the bunch.

Set on the windswept Horn Head peninsula on the north coast of Ireland, Tra Mor isn’t far across the border from Northern Ireland. That doesn’t mean it is terribly easy to get to, and there’s going to be a fair walk from where ever your heading. The easiest route is from Dunfanaghy and across the extensive dunes which back the beach.

The reward is a majestic sweep of golden sand with barely a hint of anything human. There may be some footprints, or if it’s particularly busy, another person, but most days you will have this 2 km (1.5 mile) stretch to yourself.
