Dawlish Warren Beach
Backed by sand dunes, the sheltered location of Dawlish Warren offers a mix of natural beauty and traditional family entertainment; go-karts, golf, and amusement rides, as well as water sports are all available. It is also possible to hire beach huts on a daily or weekly basis. From part of the beach, there are stunning views of Exeter. In summer there are often open-air events, entertainers for children, and firework displays.
Dawlish Warren beach extends northwards for over a mile to the mouth of the River Exe and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The Marine Conservation Society also recommends the location. The nature reserve that runs behind the beach is particularly important for wading birds and wildfowl, as well as hundreds of different flowering plants. Ask at the visitors’ centre for information about the various hides.
There is a lifeguard service during the main season. Access can be difficult for pushchairs or wheelchairs: the concrete steps and ramp down to the beach are very steep. Dogs are allowed on the main beach all year round in between groyne 4 and groyne 9. There are toilet facilities close to the railway station.
Parking can be very busy at Dawlish Warren, but the location is easily reached by bus or train from Exeter. The beach holds a Blue Flag and has held the award for the past 20 years running.
