Ynyslas - Northern Groyne (Sea) Beach
This predominantly shingle beach lies about five miles up the coast from Aberystwyth, close to the south side of the River Dovey (Afon Dyfi) estuary. When the tide is out a good stretch of wet sand is exposed, leading all the way down the coast to Both.
At very low tide the remains of a prehistoric forest can sometimes be spotted out on the distant mudflats by those who know what to look for. There is an extensive dune system close to the beach, and the popular Ynyslas nature reserve Visitor Centre is nearby.
Visitors need to watch out for rapidly-incoming tides here, which quite frequently catch out beachgoers. Also, children should not be allowed to dig tunnels in the sand on this beach, as these have in the past collapsed, with tragic consequences.
