Musselburgh, which was once just a small fishing village, is a short journey from Edinburgh city centre. The town boasts a historic racecourse, a tidal harbour, two beaches and what is probably the oldest golf course in the world.

The two sandy beaches sit on either side of the tidal harbour, which today provides mooring to around 50 leisure boats rather than a fishing fleet. This offers one of the least expensive tidal berthing options on the Firth of Forth.

Fisherrow West Beach is a stretch of sand and shingle lying to the west of the harbour.  It has views over the Firth of Forth, which is rich in bird life, and is backed by buildings and gardens.
The Brustone Burn enters the sea at the western end of the beach.

The harbour provides parking with a children’s play area, and places to eat, and from this car park there is immediate access to the beach. Toilets, which are open all year round, can be found at the Back Sands.

There are good walking, cycling and bus links to the beach, although the railway station is approximately one mile away. The 134-mile long John Muir Way long distance path passes adjacent to the beach.
