  • An urban beach is probably the last thing you would expect in the Shetland Isles, but Bain’s beach is very much in downtown Lerwick - capital of the islands.

Tucked in behind the Lodberries the beach here is easily overlooked. Then again as possibly the most iconic buildings in Shetland many people have probably accidentally discovered Bain’s beach whilst looking for the home of fictional detective Jimmy Perez.

Bain’s beach only really exists towards low tide and then it is accessible via a set of steps on the western end of the beach. It’s a fairly modest stretch of sand and it doesn’t get much sun later in the day but it’s a fascinating spot with great views across to Bressay.
