Woody Bay - Devon

Woody Bay

Looking east across Woody Bay. This was to be the site of an upmarket resort with pier, cliff railway, & branch line off the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway. The pier did get built in 1897, but was damaged by storms & demolished in 1902. The rest remained the unfullfilled plans of entrepreneur solicitor Benjamin Lake who ended up bankrupt & imprisoned for embezzlement.
