Elbury Cove - Devon

Old machinery, derelict bathing house, Elberry Cove

This piece of machinery is gradually rusting away, its base has been undermined by the weather and the action of the waves. Elberry Cove is on the left, Paignton is directly ahead in the centre of the picture on the horizon. Elberry Cove was Lord Churston's private cove and, in the early 1800's when sea water bathing became fashionable, he built a bathing house here which still survives. It contained two large copper boilers in which sea water could be heated, allowing for a highly constitutional hot and cold dip. Also see http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1071858
