Birling Gap Beach - East Sussex

Coastguard Cottages, Birling Gap

An alternate view of the cottages that were constructed in 1878. They were sold to private owners in 1951 who with one or two exceptions sold out to the National Trust in 1983. Originally eight in number, the first was demolished in 1973, the next in 1995 when the demolition damaged a third which also had to come down. Between their construction and 1997 it was estimated that the cliff had eroded by 89 foot. Seaford Head can be seen in the distance.
