Avon Beach (Christchurch) - Dorset

Groyne, Mudeford

Groynes are a timber framework or low broad wall, built to control sea encroachment by checking wave action on the foreshore. Shingle is swept away from one side of the groyne and piles up on the other, where it is moved up the beach at right angles to the wave.
