Sango Bay Photo
Beach and rocks near Durness, Highland
Sango Bay has a superb sandy beach, and the added interest of these rocky outcrops. This image has been scanned from an Agfacolor transparency dated August 1974. The rock stacks on the beach are of what was possibly Lewisian gneiss, but has been extensively deformed by movements during the Moine thrusting. They have been sheared to form bands of shell-shaped quartz, from which the rock has been nicknamed 'Oystershell Rock'. The cliff in the background is the Sangobeg Fault.
