Aberfforest Beach - Pembrokeshire

Lime kiln at Aberfforest

The lime kiln is positioned just above the beach, see image [[54492]], where it could be easily accessed from above with a horse and cart. It is the simplest type of pot kiln, with openings (drawing arches) on either side, connected by a drawhole to supply air. The bottom of the pit would be filled with culm (coal-dust or waste debris) which was ignited with firewood, The limestone would be added from the top and when burnt out would be removed from the top as well - a very labour-intensive task. It has been calculated that 1 ton of culm would be needed to make 2-3 tons of lime in a kiln of this type.
