Sandy Bay

In case you hadn’t guessed, Sandy Bay is indeed a very sandy beach! Backed by high cliffs the beach is around a mile in length and set in what feels like a secluded bay. However, towards low tide the beach becomes a continuous stretch of sand reaching all the way to Exmouth nearly two miles away.

Just above the beach is the Devon Cliffs seaside caravan resort owned by Haven Holidays. Along with Sandy Bay’s close proximity to Exeter this means it can get pretty busy here in the summer.

Just west of Sandy Bay are Orcombe rocks, a heritage site well known for its fossils.

I visited the beach on Friday 17th September only to be greeted by a strong smell of sewage and on the Eastern end of the beach there was a steady flow of discoloured water with toilet paper mixed in exiting from the rocks by an overflow pipe. This was flowing into the sea where children were playing.
Hardly a Blue Flag Beach. Disgusting.
